Join Thunderclap to #PassPhit

by Meredith Poppler

What is Thunderclap?
In our digital age, it is hard to be heard and capture people’s attention above all the noise. One person tweeting, calling or emailing can be the same as a person yelling across a full stadium to get the attention of someone on the other side. It is simply drowned out. But when the entire stadium yells the same message at the same time, not only is it heard, but it reverberates for miles. Thunderclap is a digital version of the entire stadium yelling the same message at the same time.

How Does Thunderclap Work? Continue reading “Join Thunderclap to #PassPhit”

John’s April Musings

Dear Soapbox Readers,

What a month this has been! The Superbowl / World Series all rolled up into one event called the IHRSA Convention. At the Petra-1 booth, we were slammed. Then add to the activity list in our attending the IHRSA Foundation mixer, Bill McBride’s reception and finally Augie’ Quest, we were running on fumes when I boarded the airplane on Saturday morning.

Next year the IHRSA Convention is in San Diego, one of my most favorite venues. Looking forward to seeing all of you at this spectacular event.

We have a number of articles in this issue and all of them worthy of your attention. It’s our mission to inform and inspire you to make a difference in those around you. You can make a difference and hopefully after you have reviewed the articles in this April issue, you will write me and let me know is we are motivating you in some small way to make a difference. Supporting PHIT

Legislation That Will Make Physical Activity More Affordable and Accessible

Physical inactivity is the cause of 1 in 10 deaths worldwide. We are in the midst of an inactivity and obesity crisis which is costing billions of dollars in unnecessary healthcare expenditures. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that approximately 86% of nationwide healthcare costs are used to diagnose and treat chronic diseases. Needless to say, something has to change! Decades of research prove that leading a physically active lifestyle is integral to good health. Simply put, an investment in staying physically active is an investment in staying well. And good health means lower healthcare costs. At a time when Americans are carrying the growing weight of their healthcare costs, they should have greater choice in how their healthcare dollars are spent. While America’s healthcare dilemma is complex and will require many solutions, passing PHIT will make staying physically active an easier and more affordable choice.

“The PHIT Act would make it easier for Americans and their families to prioritize health and wellness – and hopefully save money on future doctor visits.”

– PHIT co-sponsor Senator John Thune (R-SD)

The Personal Health Investment Today Act (PHIT – H.R.1267 and S.482) will allow Americans to use flexible spending accounts (FSAs) and health savings accounts (HSAs) to pay for health club memberships, fitness equipment, exercise videos, and youth sports leagues. If passed, it will allow individuals to use up to $1,000 per year to cover these expenses and families to use up to $2,000 per year.

Beyond Type 1 Announces Partnership with Medical Fitness Network to Provide New Fitness and Allied Healthcare Provider Resource

An overall wellness plan of healthy living is critical for people with or without diabetes. Physical activity can benefit people, especially with those living with diabetes, in unique ways.

Diabetes and exercise are vital when it comes to managing blood glucose levels and health complications, and regular exercise usually helps improve blood glucose management in people with all types of diabetes.  A growing number of studies show that prediabetes, which can lead to type 2 diabetes, can be prevented or reversed with healthful lifestyle changes, which can also help prevent or reverse “double diabetes” in people with type 1 diabetes who become insulin resistant due to being physically inactive or gaining excess body weight.  Continue reading “Beyond Type 1 Announces Partnership with Medical Fitness Network to Provide New Fitness and Allied Healthcare Provider Resource”

Leadership Lessons

by Bill McBride

Sometimes business feels metaphorically like war.  I say metaphorically because nothing in business compares to the pain, suffering and sacrifice our dedicated soldiers defending our great nation provide.  But strategically and from a leadership perspective, there are so many lessons us civilians can learn from the great military leaders like Retired Secretary of State Colin Powell.

With strategic “battle” planning, one must take into account:

  1. One’s Army – Team condition and capabilities.  Competency, Readiness, Morale, & Confidence in leadership
  2. The Enemy – Population Inactivity, “Substitutes” to our product offerings, and our Competition (although this makes us better and is not our core threat it is an adversary in talent and member acquisition)
  3. The Geography & Climate – Local, state & federal economic factors, local & federal regulations, weather, workforce talent, population density and consumer demographics
  4. Leadership & Strategy – Leadership & Strategy

2017- The Year of Empowerment

by Latoya Bullard-Franklin – CEO, The Bulsard Group, LLC

Happy YOU Year!

This is your year, the year to focus on YOU! Your dreams, your goals, your aspirations!  Every year for the past few years, I have noticed a central theme to manifest itself in my life throughout that year.  This same theme manifested itself in the lives of many women in my circle as well.  For 2017 it will be the year of YOU-the year of Empowerment!!!

What is this thing called empowerment?  Empowerment is defined as the state of giving power or authority to someone or something officially.  So, let’s officially give the power over our lives to ourselves, control our own destiny, and not let others control us.  When we ask ourselves the following: “What will they think of me? What if they don’t like…? Who will support…? When will they…?”; we are enabling others to control who we are and what we do in our own lives.  The energy spent on these statements should be put towards those that affirm like “Wait until they see me now!”, “Wait until I…!”, “What will I do to achieve…?!” Continue reading “2017- The Year of Empowerment”

Exceeding Expectations – An Offer You Can’t Refuse

Based upon experience, you are in a business where you have to live by the motto of “watch the pennies and the dollars take care of themselves”. The competition in the athletic club marketplace is brutal and you need to save money wherever you can. Petra-1 can provide the savings.

If we can provide savings of 20-25% versus your current consumable products and provide free dispensers, would this be of interest?

Bill McBride and Brent Darden have used our patented Wizard Soap System in their facilities. When Bill required a savings in his liquid soap budget of 20-30%, realized his customers would demand a premium performing liquid soap and the facility staff wanted customer service that meets or exceeds their expectation, there was only one choice, Petra-1. As we have done with close to two thousand facilities, we have met the same requirements as were required by Brent and Bill.

Both Vince and I feel so confident about what we can provide that I’ll make you this offer, if we can’t produce the results mentioned above, we will donate to your favorite charity $250.00. Let’s do a trial of our Wizard Liquid Soap System products and let your members decide. If we don’t meet or exceed your expectations as to shower area consumables, we will gladly make a donation to your favorite charity in your name.

When it comes to liquid consumable products, towels/textiles and equipment wipes, Petra-1 is your one-stop-shop.

If you are attending IHRSA, please drop by our booth (#617) … where we will have a few goodies to share and let’s chat how we can provide a better membership experience and save you money.

Please see our latest Petra e-brochure. Please review and let’s discuss when we see you at IHRSA

It’s a pleasure and privilege to serve you.

Petra: Making Life More Comfortable

Why I Use Petra Non-Alcoholic Foaming Hand Sanitizer

By William Ryan

I am a 68-year-old retiree, married 43 years with three grandchildren. I am writing to tell my story of how I have found great help and relief with the Petra Non-Alcoholic Hand Sanitizer. The story starts in my twenties when I was still in college. I discovered after moving from an area where there is no poison oak to one ravaged with poison oak brush that I had quite an allergic reaction to the plant. Following one particularly annoying outbreak on my hands I was dismayed to find that a chronic dry rash developed on the back of my hands and between some of my fingers that didn’t go away.  After trying various moisturizing creams, I went to a dermatologist. I was diagnosed with a chronic eczema type rash condition and was prescribed a prescription cortisone cream (before such creams were available over the counter).  Through the years I have mostly managed to keep the intermittent rash in check using a mild cortisone cream. Eventually, these remedies became available over the counter.  I had to make efforts though not to use harsh soap or expose my hands to dishwashing or laundry detergent or other harsh chemicals which were sure to bring back an outbreak.

William Ryan – Avid Petra Supporter

I managed my condition fairly well for the most part until about eight years ago not long after my retirement from my profession as a mental health counselor. An unfortunate episode occurred where my dog was sprayed by a backyard skunk. In the process of trying to give assistance to my dog and clean her up, my hands were exposed to contact with the skunk oil. The result was catastrophic and the eczema condition on my hands erupted into a cracked and bleeding mess. My doctor and dermatologist prescribed powerful steroid creams which eventually stabilized my condition. However, I was advised to avoid washing my hands with soap and water. As a result, I sought the use of non-alcoholic hand sanitizing products to clean and sanitize my hands. I used one or two with some success but I still had dryness with occasional breakouts. Through my health club, I discovered Petra non-alcoholic foaming hand sanitizer. It proved to be far superior to the other sanitizers I had used, because of its moisturizing and cleansing effects without dryness and lessened the incidence of breakouts. I found one source of Petra for a time and used the Petra product at home regularly with success carrying a small dispenser in my pocket at al times.  I am grateful for this product and happy to report it has solved this problem of hand care and cleanliness for me making my life more comfortable.

Chocolate Equals Happiness

wood-house-heart

by John Anderson
Proprietor, Woodhouse Chocolate

My wife and I make chocolates for a living. In and of itself there is nothing strange about that, but while most chocolate companies are generations old businesses, prior to 2002 we had never made a chocolate in our lives. Not only were we going to hand make Belgian style chocolates (the most challenging in the world), but we were going to need to charge many times what Americans were accustomed to paying for them. So, what’s a couple to do? We started by making the deal that she would make the chocolates, and I would do everything else; an almost even split. My wife Tracy, a professional chef, spent the better part of two years learning the craft through training in Montreal, travel to Belgium to deconstruct their chocolates first hand, a great deal of reading, and, of course, a lot of trial and error. At the same time, my father-in-law and I gutted an 1890’s building back to stone and mud to build our store and kitchen. With that, we threw our doors open in April of 2004 hoping to succeed.
